De Canadees keert hiermee terug naar het genre van de bodyhorror dat hem een uniek plaatsje bezorgde in de filmwereld. Als we daar aan toevoegen dat&nbsp;<em>Crimes Of The Future<\/em>&nbsp;Cronenberg grand cru is, dan weet iedere filmliefhebber dat dit een film is waar bepaalde toeschouwers best wel een kotszakje voor nodig zullen hebben. Bereid je dus voor op een sciencefiction-achtige thriller met lichamen waaruit rottende tumoren springen of sc\u00e8nes waarin perverselingen uit pure wellust de operatiewonden van hun geliefde likken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De titel refereert naar Cronenbergs tweede film uit 1970, die ook\u00a0<em>Crimes Of The Future\u00a0<\/em>heette, ofschoon de plot ervan compleet anders was. Sommigen zagen hierin het onheilspellende nieuws dat hiermee de cirkel rond was en dat\u00a0<em>Crimes Of The Future<\/em>\u00a0wel eens de zwanenzang van Cronenberg zou kunnen worden, zeker nadat hij onlangs (net als David Bowie in\u00a0<em>Black Star<\/em>) met\u00a0<em>The Death Of David Cronenberg<\/em>\u00a0een macabere kortfilm van \u00e9\u00e9n minuut over zijn eigen dood had gemaakt. Het is een kwestie die David Cronenberg al eerder aansneed in <em>Dead Ringers <\/em>uit 1988. Zonder een specifiek jaartal op te geven, speelt de film zich af in de toekomst. Saul (Viggo Mortensen) maakt via een technologie in zijn lichaam nieuwe organen aan. Deze neo-organen, zoals ze genoemd worden, zijn dan ook overbodig en kunnen verwijderd worden, wat gebeurt door zijn partner Caprice (L\u00e9a Seydoux), die de operaties uitvoert als een artistiek toneelstuk. Deze vreemde taferelen springen in het oog van het Nationaal Orgaanregister dat de controle heeft over de donororganen en gerund wordt door Wippet (Don McKellar) en Timlin (een doodenge en wederom imponerende Kristen Stewart, ook al had Cronenberg Natalie Portman hiervoor in gedachten).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het verhaal lijkt best ingewikkeld en veel te ver gezocht, maar Cronenberg is nog altijd een meesterverteller waarbij elk detail in verhaal zijn waarde heeft. De finale is een overduidelijke knipoog naar de sciencefiction-klassieker\u00a0<em>Soylent Green<\/em>, want je bent immers wat je eet. Bereid je in de eerste vijf minuten van de film maar voor op beelden van een kind dat een plastic prullenmand opvreet en vervolgens door zijn moeder (de Isra\u00eblische Lihi Kornowski, die de revelatie is van deze film) met een kussensloop verstikt wordt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cronenberg had \u00a0het script grotendeels reeds 20 jaar geleden geschreven onder de titel\u00a0<em>Painkillers<\/em>, wat toen een film moest worden met Nicolas Cage, maar alles kwam opnieuw terecht in de handen van zijn bijna vaste acteur Viggo Mortensen, ook al wilde die in eerste instantie een andere rol vertolken. Je merkt wel dat\u00a0<em>Crimes Of The Future<\/em>\u00a0wat gevangen zit in zijn eigen krappe budget, want nooit oogden de decors in een Cronenberg-film zo sober.
