Naast zwemmen spendeert ze haar vrije tijd in het participeren aan een zangkoor dat zich voorbereidt op een groots festivaloptreden. Wanneer ze tijdens de repetities Martin leert kennen, komt haar afgemeten leven plots in een stroomversnelling terecht. Beide lotgenoten worden halsoverkop verliefd op elkaar en zijn terstond onafscheidelijk. Als ze plotsklaps worden \u2018betrapt\u2019, gaan de (familiale) poppen pas echt aan het dansen. Doorgaans wordt er ook (te) weinig rekening gehouden met hun rijke en innige emotionele leefwereld. Nochtans heeft iedereen recht op een gelijkwaardig bestaan, dus ook verstandelijk gehandicapten. Waarom zouden deze mensen trouwens geen zelfstandig leven kunnen uitbouwen of mogen genieten van hun eigen seksualiteit? Pertinente vragen die in <em>Gabrielle<\/em> van de Canadese cineaste Louise Archambault, in pseudo-documentaire-stijl en wars van enig gemoraliseer, worden geponeerd. <br><br>Tevens is dit ook een aangrijpende en sociaal ge\u00ebngageerde prent waarin een warm, \u2018muzikaal\u2019 en vooral oprecht pleidooi wordt gehouden voor meer empathie, begrip en openheid op te brengen voor deze levenslustige subgroep binnen onze (veeleisende) maatschappij. De andersvalide Gabrielle Marion-Rivard vertolkt op pakkende manier het hoofdpersonage en het scenario is (uiteraard) gebaseerd op re\u00eble situaties.
