Aan Cillian Murphy of zelfs Rachel McAdams ligt het in ieder geval niet, wel aan het veel te dwaze scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lisa Reisert is een hotelreceptioniste die na het bijwonen van de begrafenis van haar grootmoeder een nachtvlucht (wat in het Amerikaans ook wel een red eye genoemd wordt, vandaar de titel) van Dallas naar Miami moet nemen. Alles loopt door vertragingen in het honderd, maar gelukkig weet ze de verveling te breken door de charmes van Jack Rippner (Cillian Murphy). De man maakt een dwaas grapje dat zijn ouders zwarte humor hadden (denk aan zijn naam en Jack The Ripper), en al gauw blijkt dat waar te zijn want eens op het vliegtuig verandert het sympathieke heerschap in een monster die werkt voor een terroristische organisatie die van plan isom &nbsp;Charles Keefe, de huidige adjunct-secretaris van Binnenlandse Veiligheid van de Verenigde Staten, te vermoorden. Lisa moet ervoor zorgen dat ze in het hotel waar ze werkt een andere kamer aan Keefe kan geven zodat men vanaf een boot een raket naar zijn hotelkamer kan sturen. Het verhaal werd neergepend met de gedachte dat Sean Penn en Robin Wright erin zouden spelen, maar uiteindelijk koos Wes Craven voor jongere leads en dacht hij zelfs eventjes aan Kristen Stewart.
