Emily (Emma Mackey die voor altijd met de Netflixserie <em>Sex education<\/em> verbonden zal blijven) is de middelste van de literaire Bront\u00eb zussen en wordt in hun woonplaats Haworth beschouwd als \u201cthe strange one\u201d. Ze komt ook vreemd over: altijd stopt ze zich in gezelschap weg achter haar zussen, ze zal zelf niemand aanspreken en houdt er van om alleen over de heidelandschappen te zwerven waarbij ze meer dan \u00e9\u00e9n keer druipnat van de regen thuiskomt. Je kan dat interpreteren zoals je wil, maar de manier waarop Mackey haar portretteert, doet hard denken aan een heel extreme introvert die haar aandacht en energie enkel aan bepaalde mensen kan en wil geven.<br><br>En dat zijn vooral haar familieleden en in het bijzonder haar oudere broer Branwell die als het zwarte schaap van de familie beschouwd wordt. In hoeverre ze in werkelijkheid met elkaar om gingen is niet gekend, maar Frances O\u2019Connor maakt er meteen een liefdeshistorie van die enkel in mineur kan aflopen.<br><br>Met Weightman oefent ze haar Frans \u2013 met zus Charlotte trekt Emily naar Brussel om daar les te geven en hun Frans was meer dan behoorlijk \u2013 en dat is natuurlijk het moment voor Mackey om de wereld nog eens te laten zien dat ze perfect tweetalig is. Wat ze ook al in de film <em>Eiffel <\/em>(2021) met tegenspeler Romain Duris bewees.<br><br><em>Emily<\/em> is een biografische film met nogal wat dichterlijke vrijheden geworden en dat stoort helemaal niet, vooral dan omdat er juist over het leven van Emily Bront\u00eb weinig geweten is. Of toch: ze publiceerde slechts \u00e9\u00e9n roman, <em>Wuthering heights<\/em>, en stierf een jaar na de publicatie ervan op 30-jarige leeftijd. Emily krijgt de eerste publicatie van haar boek te zien in de film maar daar staat haar naam op de rug. Het boek werd in werkelijkheid onder een mannelijk pseudoniem uitgegeven en haar naam zou pas 10 jaar later bij een heruitgave op de cover komen. Ze heeft dat dus nooit zelf gezien. Een historische lapsus en des te spijtiger omdat O\u2019Connor de film vanuit het vrouwelijke oogpunt en de moeilijkheden die vrouwen in de tijd doormaakten presenteert. Dan zou zo\u2019n ding juist wel in de film moeten zitten.<em> Emily <\/em>is desondanks een geslaagde historische film over een meer dan intrigerende historische figuur.
