Het programma van de 77ste editie van Cannes is bekend, of toch bijna, want festivaldirecteur Thierry Frémaux onthulde 19 competitiefilms, maar vertelde tegelijkertijd dat er later nog 3 extra titels zullen volgen. Momenteel dingen al klinkende namen zoals Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold, David Cronenberg, Ali Abbasi, Sean Baker, Jia Zhangke, Paul Schrader en Paolo Sorrentino mee naar de Gouden Palm. Ook de grootmeester Francis Ford Coppola maakt kans op het begeerde beeldje met zijn fel geanticipeerde Megalopolis. Een scifi-film met o.a. Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza en Jason Schwartzman op de aftiteling.
Ook George Miller’s Furiosa zal door Cannes razen. De blockbuster met Anya Taylor-Joy en Chris Hemsworth gaat er buiten competitie in wereldpremière, net als Kevin Costner’s tweedelige Horizon: An American Saga en The Second Act van veelfilmer Quentin Dupieux. Die laatste mag de Franse sterrencast bestaande uit Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel en Raphaël Quenard meenemen naar de openingsavond van het festival.
