Wie zei daar alweer dat fysieke media dood is? In 2023 kregen we er met Radiance, een Brits boutiquelabel bij dat zich specialiseert in het uitbrengen van obscure films die door het publiek om de foute redenen vergeten zijn. Kortom, een label naar ons hart. Oprichter Francesco Simeoni die jaren bij Arrow Films werkte, geeft ons met plezier zijn vijf filmparels.
Francesco: ” Ik zou veel meer obscure titels kunnen kiezen waarvan ik denk dat ze beslist wat meer aandacht verdienen, maar ik wilde voor films gaan die je effectief fysiek kan kopen.”
LE PLEIN DE SUPER
Toen ik deze film zag was, voelde dat als een echte ontdekking aan. Ik was destijds meer bezig met genrefilms dan met wat Alain Cavalier deed, maar Le Plein de Super had toch iets van een komisch drama van Mike Leigh of Withnail & I van Bruce Robinson. Het script voelt zeer naturel aan, ook al heeft men er maanden aan gewerkt. De personages geven me zo’n warm genoeg gevoel dat ik wel dagenlang met hun zou willen optrekken, zeker met hun humor! Het was een eer dat ik met Radiance deze titel op Blu-ray kon uitbrengen.
MADE IN HONG KONG
Deze film voelt enorm tijdloos aan, en herinnert me aan de subgenres van het gangsterthema. In Hong Kong vind je trouwens een heleboel van dit soort films.
LA CIENAGA
Ik hou echt van Lucriecia Martel, maar haar eerste grote film is blijkbaar niet zo bekend. Het is een vuile, maar tegelijkertijd intense film die in de zomer afspeelt. La Cienaga is verbluffend geregisseerd, en dat voor een debuut! Het is verbluffend om te zien hoe de kijker steeds alsmaar meer van zijn stuk wordt gebracht door de chaotische beelden en geluiden.
DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY
Ik ben dol op deze pseudo-documentaire die oogt als een echte documentaire. David Holzman’s Diary biedt een prachtige blik op het cinematografische New York uit de jaren 60 en is een must voor elke filmliefhebber.
THE SWIMMER
The Swimmer is een opmerkelijke film, die misschien wat doet denken aan Seconds die een paar jaar eerder verscheen, maar dit is radicaler. Zeker voor een film die uit zo’n grote studio komt en met een sombere en surrealistische Burt Lancaster in topvorm.

Francesco: “I could choose a lot more obscure titles that definitely deserve a bit more attention, but I wanted to go for films that you can actually buy physically.”
LE PLEIN DE SUPER
This film is a real discovery, when I saw it I was more familiar with Cavalier’s genre films but this, much more of a comedy drama like Mike Leigh doing Withnail & I was a real surprise. The natural quality of the script which came from months of workshopping makes the film feel so light, the performances make the characters feel warm enough to want to spend time with over and over, and the humour certainly allows for it. It’s been a pleasure working on this title I and I look forward to people discovering it.
MADE IN HONG KONG
This Hong Kong handover film feels incredibly timeless with such beautiful filmmaking recalling earlier forays into this remarkable sub genre of the gangster and the girl that stretches across continents but is also well represented in Hong Kong through numerous films.
LA CIENAGA
I love Lucriecia Martel but her first major film seems to be less well known. It’s a dirty, intense film that focuses on a small period of time in an extended family’s summer. Stunningly directed for a debut with an amazing control of such a chaotic collection of images and sounds that increasingly unnerve the viewer.
DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY
I love this pseudo documentary that takes the documentary form and utilises it as much as a document of 1960s New York an contemporary cinephilia. It’s a beautiful window into another time and a must for any film lover.
THE SWIMMER
This is a remarkable film, perhaps only with Seconds from a couple of years earlier to be such a radical film for a major studio and central star. Decidedly bleak and surreal Lancaster is on top form.
