Het 77e filmfestival van Cannes is ten einde met de prijsuitreiking in het Grand Théâtre Lumière. Emilia Perez, The Substance (met Demi Moore in haar competitiedebuut), Anora, All We Imagine as Light, Caught By the Tides, The Girl with the Needle en The Seed of the Sacred Fig behoren tot de best ontvangen films van het programma en plaatsen allemaal vrouwen in het middelpunt van hun verhaal.
Andere spraakmakende titels zijn onder andere het The Apprentice met Sebastian Stan en Jeremy Strong in de hoofdrollen en Limonov: The Ballad van de dissidente Russische filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov met Ben Whishaw in de hoofdrol.
En waren ook heel wat veteranen. Onder hen Francis Ford Coppola met Megalopolis, Andrea Arnold en haar Bird, Paul Schrader’s Oh Canada, David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds en Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope.
Maar er kan maar één de Gouden Palm winnen en dat is dit jaar Sean Baker voor Anora, een thriller die zich afspeelt in New York. George Lucas ontving een ere Gouden Palm voor zijn hele carrière.
