Met het uitreiken van de prijzen en het vertonen van de slotfilm werd gisterenavond een punt gezet achter de 76ste editie van het internationale filmfestival van Locarno. De Iraanse overheden waren vermoedelijk niet enthousiast bij het horen van de winnaar, want het Gouden Luipaard ging uiteindelijk naar Ali Ahmadzadeh’s Critical Zone (Mantagheye bohrani). De film speelt zich af tijdens één woelige nacht in Teheran en wordt omschreven als een ode aan de vrijheid en het verzet. Vanuit Iran werd de voorbije weken opgeroepen om de film niet te vertonen op het grootste Zwitserse filmfestival. De film zou zonder toestemming zijn gedraaid door een uit het land verbannen regisseur.
De slotavond werd zo helemaal een Iraans feestje, want na de prijsuitreiking volgde de wereldpremière van Shayda, een door Cate Blanchett geproduceerde film van Noora Niasari en met Holy Spider-revelatie Zar Amir Ebrahimi in de hoofdrol.
Radu Jude, een grote lieveling van de critici, mocht de Special Jury Prize ophalen voor Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World en de getalenteerde Oekraïense nieuwkomer Maryna Vroda werd bekroond als beste regisseur voor haar film Stepne.
De gloednieuwe genderneutrale acteerprijzen gingen dan weer naar Dimitra Vlagopoulou voor Animal en Renée Soutendijk in Ena Sendijarević’s Sweet Dreams.
