Gisteren werd een punt gezet achter Sundance 2024 en zoals bij de meeste filmfestivals werd dit feestelijk beklonken met de prijsuitreiking. De grote winnaar van deze editie was dat In The Summers dat zowel met de Grand Jury Prize als de prijs voor beste regie (Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio) naar huis mocht. In The Summers vertelt het verhaal van 2 tienermeisjes die hun zomervakantie moeten doorbrengen bij het liefhebbende, maar voortvluchtige vader in New Mexico.
Ook Didi en Daughters mochten meerdere awards mee naar huis nemen. Zo won Didi voor beste ensemblecast en was het ook de nummer 1 bij het publiek wat betreft de fictiefilms, maar de algemene publiekslieveling was Daughters dat zowel bij de documentaires de audience award won alsook de overkoepelende publiekstrofee voor het ganse festival. Daughters neemt de kijkers mee naar een Amerikaanse gevangenis waar 4 jonge meisjes een speciale vader-dochter-dans met hun geïnterneerde vaders voorbereiden, terwijl Didi over een 13-jarig Taiwanees/Amerikaanse jongetje dat de ware moederliefde ontdekt.
Op het uitgebreide palmares vonden we ook één Belg terug: onze landgenoot Johan Grimonprez werd bekroond met de World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation voor Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat. Zijn documentaire is opgebouwd uit archiefbeelden en historische muziekopnames rond de postkoloniale strijd om de vele grondstoffen van Congo ten tijde van de onafhankelijkheid in 1960. De film wordt verteld vanuit het unieke perspectief van Andrée Blouin, een vergeten pionier van de vrouwelijke emancipatie en onafhankelijkheid in Afrika.
