VICTORIA
Victoria is een Duitse thriller die geregisseerd werd door Sebastian Shipper. De plot en de vertolking van Victoria Laia zijn allebei ongelooflijk, maar vooral het feit dat deze film in één keer werd opgenomen is verbazingwekkend. Het script bestond uit amper 12 pagina’s waarvan de meeste dialogen geïmproviseerd waren. Victoria is het ultieme voorbeeld van hoe je een creatieve stroom alsmaar kan aanhouden. Ik was ook diep onder de indruk hoe alle acteurs de spanning gaande wisten te houden en zoveel verschillende emoties konden tonen. Ik ga niet te veel over de verhaallijn verklappen, maar als je ooit in Berlijn was dan zul je de vreemde magie van deze stad in elke seconde van deze film wel kunnen herkennen. Voor mij is Victoria een waar feest, en dat zeg ik niet alleen omdat ik zelf in Berlijn woonde, maar ook als cinefiel.
BERLIN CALLING
Ik beloof je dat deze tweede film die ook iets met Berlijn te maken heeft de laatste in het rijtje is, maar deze kon ik deze echt niet weglaten. Berlin Calling vertelt het levensverhaal van de Duitse dj Paul Kalkbrenner en werd geregisseerd door Hannes Stöhr. Het gaat over de surrealistische Berlijnse technoscène, maar ook over hoe je als artiest gekweld kan zijn, over hoe je met roem en populariteit moet omgaan, verslaving en droefheid. De enige “maar” bij deze prachtige tragikomedie is dat indien je niet zo veel van elektronische muziek houdt zoals ik, dat je de film wat minder zou kunnen vinden.
THE DRESSMAKER
Laten we naar de andere kant van de wereld reizen, en wel naar Australië. The Dressmaker is een Australische komedie-dramafilm uit 2015, die geschreven en geregisseerd werd door Jocelyn Moorhouse, en gebaseerd is op de gelijknamige roman. Als grote fan van Kate Winslet hield ik van haar verbluffende vertolking in deze film. The Dressmaker is een prachtige meditatie over de belangrijkste menselijke thema’s: wraak, liefde en creativiteit. Ook al kan kunst niet alle wonden helen, kan het er wel voor zorgen dat zelfs de lelijkste littekens er mooi uitzien. Ik schreef trouwens een artikel waarom ik denk dat je het boek absoluut moet lezen.
SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED
Laten we eindigen met een Amerikaanse romantische komedie, want ik weet zeer goed dat je hierop zat te wachten (lacht). Ik moet toegeven dat ik best wel een grote fan ben van romantische komedies en musicals, daar kan ik echt niets aan doen. Maar Safety Not Guaranteed is zeker geen typische romantische komedie, hoewel ook hier een jongen en een meisje verliefd op elkaar worden. De film bevat een zeer oprecht sciencefictionverhaal, sublieme acteurs, er wordt in de tijd gereisd en je wordt geconfronteerd met alle mogelijke emoties waardoor Safety Not Guaranteed een absolute must-watch is! Genieten!

VICTORIA
Victoria is a German thriller movie directed by Sebastian Shipper. The plot and the main actress, Victoria Laia, are both incredible, but there is one more amazing thing to this movie: it was shot in one single take. The script consisted of 12 pages, with most of the dialogue being improvised. For me it is an absolute championship in maintaining the creative flow, being present and I was deeply impressed of how all of the actors were able to maintain the tension and drift through so many different emotions within a few hours of shooting. I am not going to reveal too much about the storyline but if you have ever been to Berlin, you will be able to recognise the city’s peculiar magic in every second of the film. For me personally, as an ex-citizen and a cinephile, it is a real feast.
BERLIN CALLING
This is the second and last movie that has something to do with Berlin, I promise. But I couldn’t leave it out. This is the life story of a famous German DJ, Paul Kalkbrenner, directed by Hannes Stöhr. This film is all about the surreal Berlin techno scene, about being a (tormented) artist, about managing fame, addiction, existencial sadness and popularity. A wonderful tragicomedy. The only ‘but’ being: if you are absolutely not into electronic music, you might not enjoy it as much as I did.
THE DRESSMAKER
So let’s travel from Berlin to the other side of the world: Australia. The Dressmaker is a 2015 Australian comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, based on the novel of the same name. As a huge fan of Kate Winslet I absolutely loved her stunning performance in this film. A wonderful meditation on the main human issues: revenge, love and creativity. Even though art cannot fix all of the things, it can surely heal many wounds and make even the ugliest scars look quite beautiful. Here is the article why I think you must read the book.
SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED
Let’s finish with an American romantic comedy, I know you were actually waiting for it. I must confess I am a huge fan of romantic comedies and musicals, there is nothing I can do about it. But this one is not a typical romantic comedy, although there is a guy and a girl falling, kind of, in love with each other. Add a very heartfelt science-fiction, sublime actors, time travel and all possible emotions to the mix and here it comes: Safety Not Guaranteed. Absolutely a must-watch! Enjoy!
