De 34-jarige Oekraïense regisseur Pavlo Ostrikov studeerde in 2012 af aan de National Aviation University en trok een jaar later naar de New York Film Academy om een cursus scenarioschrijven te volgen. In 2014 debuteerde hij met de kortfilm The Stop en hij de smaak te pakken. Boom (2015), Golden Love (2016), Graduation ’97 (2017) en Mia Donna (2018) zou volgen. Vooral Graduation ’97 scoorde internationaal goed. De kortfilm werd geselecteerd voor o.a. Locarno en Palm Springs, en versierde ook een nominatie bij de European Film Awards.
Na wat televisiewerk is het nu tijd voor zijn langspeeldebuut U Are The Universe. De film ging in wereldpremière in Toronto en is de komende dagen te bekijken op het filmfestival van Oostende.
In U Are the Universe maken we kennis met Andriy Melnyk, die een eenzaam maar gelukkig bestaan leidt in zijn ruimteschip. Hij wordt belast met de taak om radioactief afval te dumpen op de maan Callisto en brengt heel wat tijd door met zijn vrolijke robotvriend. Kort nadat hij te horen krijgt dat hij zijn job verliest, wordt hij getuige van de totale verwoesting van de Aarde. Maakt dat van Andriy nu de laatste overgebleven mens in het hele universum?
Fast Forward vroeg aan Pavlo Ostrikov welke films een grote indruk op hem hebben gemaakt en we zeker moeten bekijken. Zijn tips:
Memories of Murder
Deze film was een zeer aangename verrassing en mijn toegangspoort tot de Koreaanse cinema, waarna ik besloot alles van Bong Joon-Ho te verkennen. Ik houd ervan hoe de film langzaam de sfeer opbouwt en je tot wanhoop drijft. Je voelt de onbereikbaarheid van rechtvaardigheid op het moment dat je die het hardst nodig hebt. En het einde! Oh my god, het lijkt alsof dat einde altijd bij me zal blijven. Dit is een emotionele reis die nog lang na het kijken voortduurt.
Perfect Days
In mijn eigen werk voel ik me ongemakkelijk als ik niet om de paar minuten een plotwending of een emotionele scène toevoeg. En wat is het dan fijn om een compleet andere film te zien die ik zelf nooit zou maken, maar die me volledig in zijn greep houdt. Wim Wenders heeft een briljante film gemaakt die ik op het perfecte moment heb gezien. Wanneer het lijkt alsof je laatste zenuwcellen je verlaten, de luchtalarmen constant klinken, leer je elke dag te waarderen, hoe die ook mag zijn. De harmonie van de hoofdpersoon lijkt op jou over te slaan en je wilt elk moment van je leven vastleggen. Ik raad deze film aan iedereen aan, maar ik ben nog gelukkiger als iemand zegt dat ze hem al hebben gezien. Dan kunnen we eindeloos praten over het licht in de bladeren.
Lost in Translation
De herfst associeer ik altijd met een periode van reflectie, introspectie en eenzaamheid. Een tijd waarin je kunt nadenken over de weg die je hebt afgelegd, terugkijken en de balans opmaken. Deze periode associeer ik met de film Lost in Translation van Sofia Coppola. Ik weet niet eens zeker of het herfst is in de film. Maar zo voelt het wel. De hoofdpersonen lijken hun leven op pauze te zetten en na te denken over waar het leven hen heeft gebracht. Twee eenzamen in een vreemde stad die elkaar toevallig ontmoeten. Ik ben dol op deze film. Hij geeft hoop, maar is tegelijkertijd behoorlijk bitter; hij is grappig en droevig tegelijk. En dan is daar Bill Murray! Hij is de wandelende ambassadeur van de herfst en in Lost in Translation speelde hij een van zijn beste rollen.
Moon
Ik kan niet anders dan denken aan een van de meesterwerken van low-budget sciencefiction: Moon van Duncan Jones. Het lijkt alsof alles hier samenkwam om ons een onvergetelijk verhaal te geven. De esthetiek van de ruimte, Sam Rockwell als de hoofdrolspeler, Gerty en de plotwendingen maken deze film heel bijzonder. En het was deze film die mij het meest inspireerde om mijn eigen film over de ruimte te maken. Duncan liet zien hoe je een Hollywoodfilm kunt creëren met weinig middelen, die direct een sci-fi klassieker werd. Ik hoop dat hij meer dan één regisseur inspireert om zijn eigen reis naar de ruimte te maken.
Mary and Max
Deze film opende voor mij de wereld van animatie, die veel dieper en emotioneler is dan ik had gedacht. Het is een ongelooflijke prestatie van alle betrokken afdelingen, maar bijzondere lof gaat uit naar Adam Elliot. Hij creëerde een ongelooflijk bitterzoet verhaal over twee eenzame mensen die uiteindelijk elkaar vinden. Het is grappig, pijnlijk, melancholisch, maar het is een ervaring die we allemaal nodig hebben. We hebben ons allemaal weleens eenzaam gevoeld, dus je moet deze film zien, want je bent niet alleen.

In U Are the Universe, we are introduced to Andriy Melnyk, who leads a lonely but happy existence in his spaceship. This film was once a very pleasant surprise and a gateway to Korean cinema, after which I decided to learn everything about Bong Joon-Ho. I like how it slowly develops the atmosphere and brings you to despair. You understand the unattainability of justice at a time when you need it most. And the ending! Oh my god, it seems like he will be with me forever. This is an emotional walk that continues long after watching the film.
Perfect Days
In my works, I feel uncomfortable if I don’t make a plot twist or an emotional scene for a few minutes. And how nice it is to see a completely different film that I will never make, but it captivates me. Wim Wenders unexpectedly created a brilliant film that I watched very timely. When it seems that the last nerve cells are leaving you, the air raid sirens are constantly sounding, you learn to appreciate every day, whatever it may be. The harmony of the main character seems to be transmitted to you, and you want to capture every moment of your life. I recommend this film to everyone, but I am even more happy when someone says that they have already seen it. Then we can talk about the light in the leaves for a long time.
Lost in Translation
Autumn is always associated with a period of reflection, introspection and loneliness for me. A period when you can somehow think about the path you have taken, look back and sum up. This period is associated with the film Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola. I am not even sure if autumn is there in the plot. But it feels like it is. The heroes of the film seem to put life on pause and think about where life has thrown them. Two loneliness in a foreign city who accidentally met. I adore this movie. It gives hope, but at the same time it is quite bitter, it is funny and sad at the same time. And here is Bill Murray himself! He is the walking ambassador of autumn, and in Lost in Translation he played one of his best roles.
Moon
I can’t help but remember one of the masterpieces of low-budget sci-fi, Moon by Duncan Jones. It seems that everything came together here to give us an unforgettable story. The aesthetics of space, Sam Rockwell as the main character, Gerty and the plot twists make this film very special. And it was the movie which inspired me the most to make my own film about space. Duncan showed how to create a Hollywood film for little money, which instantly became a sci-fi classic. And I want him to inspire more than one director to make his own journey into space.
Mary and Max
This film became my guide to the world of animation, which is much deeper and more emotional than I thought. It’s an incredible job by all departments, but a special credit to Adam Elliot. He created an incredibly bittersweet story of two lonely people who eventually find each other. It’s funny, it’s painful, it’s melancholic, but it’s an experience we all need. We’ve all felt lonely, so you need to see this movie because you’re not alone.
